Women’s Associations and saving scheme

Tribal and Dalit community in the kodai hills were exploited by money lenders and these people were losing their earning by paying huge rate of interest. Analyzing the socio-economic dimensions of indebtedness and exploitation among tribal and Dalit communities, women associations were formed in the target villages from 1991. Women’s associations began to do small savings. As the savings of women increased the inflow of money lenders began to reduce in the villages of these people. The highly exploited womenfolk were organized through these ‘women associations’ in their respective villages. PEAK team co-ordinated their monthly meetings and conducted bi-annual awareness as well as exposure programmes. Unfortunately these associations became prey to the attractive mass schemes of the government and a few NGOs and failed to practice the norms and guidelines of the associations strictly. As a result once again the money lenders in the form of ‘recognized finance company’ have entered the villages and have made most of the families as debtors. Slowly the women begin to realize that they had become prey to the circumstances and once again they want to come together as associations to rebuild themselves.
