The realization of the movement (KHAPM) that most of them are unorganized and construction labourers who are eligible to avail the government schemes made them to launch the ‘Kodaimalai Ambedkar Unorganized and Construction Labour Union’ (KHAUCLU) in 2006. The aim was to assert the rights of the unorganized labourers and to obtain the benefits that the Government offers them through its various welfare schemes. There are more than 1500 members who have registered with this Union. Uniqueness of this union is that at least one of the office bearers must be a female. The women leaders in this union play a significant role in organizing and mobilizing the labourers to address the issues of the labourers. The fifth ‘Protest March’ was organized by this union in 2017 insisting the labour department to open a branch office of labour welfare board in Kodaikanal.
